Trump: Iran Is the World’s “Number One Sponsor of Terrorism”
US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of being the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, reiterating Washington’s long-standing position on Tehran’s support for regional armed groups.
The statement comes amid heightened US–Iran tensions, with disputes continuing over Iran’s military capabilities, regional influence, sanctions and the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington has long accused Iran of supporting groups including Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Houthis, while Tehran rejects the US characterisation and describes its regional partners as resistance movements.
The political significance is substantial: the rhetoric reinforces the Trump administration’s justification for maintaining economic and military pressure on Tehran as diplomatic efforts remain uncertain.
The statement should be understood as the US administration’s political and security assessment, rather than an independently established global ranking of state sponsorship of terrorism.
Iran remains on the US State Department’s State Sponsors of Terrorism list, a designation that carries significant economic and diplomatic consequences.
